SMART WASTE MANAGEMENT

The Problem: Recycling Contamination

This project explored one of the major challenges facing modern recycling systems: contamination caused by incorrectly sorted waste. Research highlighted that when unsuitable materials are placed within recycling streams, entire batches of waste can become difficult or impossible to recycle efficiently. The project investigated how product design and technology could be used to encourage correct waste disposal behaviours and improve recycling outcomes.

The Solution: Intelligent Waste Sorting

Using the research findings, I developed a concept waste management system designed to automatically identify and sort different material types. The system incorporated material recognition technology within the lid assembly, allowing waste items to be directed into the appropriate compartment automatically. The concept aimed to reduce user error, minimise contamination and improve the effectiveness of household recycling systems.

Final Concept & Outcome

The final concept was developed as an integrated waste sorting solution that combined product design, user-centred thinking and sustainability principles. By automating the sorting process, the design sought to improve recycling accuracy while making sustainable behaviour easier for users. The project provided valuable experience in concept development, systems thinking, CAD modelling and sustainable product design.
